LUCID

THE CLOISTERS

Everyone dreams
of being chosen.

Until they learn what
they've been chosen for.

Cian was chosen for many things.

He wanted none of it.

First, he was chosen to be a Lucid, gifted with the power to manipulate the dreams we have every night, and cursed with the knowledge that they're all real worlds. Then he was chosen to be a guardian, protecting other dreamers from the horrors leaking in from the dimensions they're dreams are butted up against.

None of that has given him the power or knowledge for what he wants; to save his dying father from some unknown ailment, with an equally unknown cure.

By his side is Kyren, a creature rescued in the outer planes. Stripped of the memories of who or what he once was, Kyren now sets out to learn what it is to be human while choosing to pledge this new life to protect the person who saved him, no matter the consequences.

Their journey takes them through the Dreamverse, a place as beautiful and horrible as every dream and nightmare it contains. Their search for answers will have them cross paths with other dreamers, other Lucids.

And worse.

They'll travel down a path to the Dreamverse's darker corners, discovering what happens when the life you've been chosen for isn't the one you dreamed it would be.

What is

lucid?

(the short of it)

Every dream is A different reality.
Every dream is A different story.

character driven action adventure in a interconnected universe set within dreams

Every dream, A different reality. Every dream, A different story.

(the long of it)

The ritual plays out night after night. Lay down. Close your eyes. Play dead until the sun rises. A third of our lives is spent with eyes shut and our minds far, far away dreaming little dreams.

Most of us don’t think much about the "why" of sleep. The reason for these nightly trips to other places. Then again most of us barely remember what we dream about. Sleep is rest and that’s all it is. One of those parts of life that is so inherently vital and important that we’re free to not think too much about it.

But what if all the worlds you’ve dreamt of were just as real as the one you find yourself "waking up" in? What if you’ve lived whole life times in each of those worlds? All the dreams you can remember (and slightly more worrisome, all the dreams you can’t remember) just as true as any other memory you’ve ever had.

The majority of the world are dreamers, unaware of what happens between shutting and opening their eyes.

A small number are different. A small number are Lucid. They know a great truth.

They know that what is and isn't real is just a matter of will and nothing more.

They learn that when the only barrier between you and reality is your force of will, you discover who you really are. You discover what you really want.

You also come face to face with what you think you deserve.

the dreamversE?

Lucid takes place within the Dreamverse, the plane of reality that contains every dreamer that will and has ever existed. It also contains every dream that will ever be dreamt.

That makes it pretty big.

It's also ever expanding, filled with people, places, demons, deities and all the less decipherable things nestled between those labels. New characters, new places, and new threats arrive as fast as they're imagined.

All of them connected.

As the story moves forward, you'll find entries added to the lore section, offering my own original artwork alongside unique perspectives and facts about different parts of the Dreamverse.

There are

NO RULES

There are no rules in our dreams, so there are no rules in the Dreamverse. So there are no rules in these stories. Everything and anything can be the star and focal point in this universe. The tales from this place will run the gamut of subjects and themes that any dream that has ever been dreamt can contain. There will be heroes and villains, saviors and killers, along with every shade between them. Many of them will move from one category to the other, based on nothing more than their actions and the persepctive fo the story.

The Dreamverse is a limitless canvas. I'll be exploring many different genres within it. How the story is told will depend on what genre and setting I think best fits it. The main Lucid books will be centered around a core of characters. But there'll be additional tales to tell. Some of these will act as origins for existing or future characters. Others will concern themselves with the side adventures of certain individuals while bigger events are playing out.

If you're familiar with comic books, you can think of these stories as stand alone titles that crossover with the main book. Or if you're familiar with Sir Terry Pratchet's Discworld series, its similar to the way those books dovetail with one another while not always being sequential sequels to one another. If you're not familiar with any of that, then Google that shit. Or, better yet, remember these wise words. Don't panic. All any of this means is there will be different options for you to engage with the series. All the side content is written as additive, not necessary, to enjoying the main series. Pick something up and try it. If you don't like it, put it back down.

Which leads us to:

!TRIGGERS!

(bang bang)

Here is your only trigger warning: There are no trigger warnings in these stories.

That's it. The Dreamverse is as safe and dangerous as you would imagine entering any random persons subconscious could be. And that includes your own. But you have it worse. You're entering mine. And trust me, as someone who has spent their entire life in my head, I can tell you that SOMETHING I create is going to rub someone the wrong way.

There are no warnings in life. There are no warnings in dreams. There are no warnings in these stories. These stories will, at any given time, try to make you laugh, cry, shout, grimace, hide, gag, frown, and smile. And a bunch of other reactions to boot. Above all else, they’ll try to entertain you. To do that effectively, I feel you can’t know what's coming. No expectations, no frustrations, right? Now you might feel that’s unsafe, and I would very much agree. That's the point.

But I can offer a bit of protection with a simple covenant.

I’ve placed all my energies into digging something out of myself and sharing it with whoever feels like exploring it. So I hold the right to deliver it as I see fit. You’ve taken the time to explore it, so you reserve the right to stop doing so whenever you feel unsafe, uninterested or, worst of all, unentertained.

I want to make you feel something, anything. I’m not sure how it will always land because there is a thin line between one person’s dream and another’s nightmare. But if at any point, you stumble across an idea or passage that hits at something you don’t want to feel, you can leave that world by simply not continuing to read.

LUCID is a labor of love. As anyone who has seen, heard, or been through labor will tell you, that shit is not nice. You love the child, despite the process. I've taken all the talent I have to try to make something in my head real. Every single sentence you read, every piece of artwork you see, this very website you're interacting with, is my own original work inspired by all the things I've found interesting and all the fucked up things that I've been privy to through my time on this particular plane of reality. I can produce all of this alone (at the cost of my sanity) but I can't make it grow alone. I need you. Yes, specifically you. If you find any entertainment in anything I've created, if it's made your day just that much easier to get through, if its part of the carrot you nibble on after getting hit with the stick, then please support it in some way.

I don't ask that without knowing how hard that is, but honestly you are probably passively supporting more things you hate right now. I know I am. That's just the nature of life. But that means that when you support something you do actually give a damn about it is that much more satisfying and impactful.

Support can be anything. Leave some glowing review about the book. Follow me on social media. Like a post. Suggest the series to a friend. Become a member of my Paetron to receive advance chapters, and more content.
